Agreed that it is a sad comment on racism in America in the 60s. But maybe the point is that little has changed. Consider that 2017 saw an amazing number of unarmed black men blown away by the police without any tangible consequences.

Overall a sad commentary on America's racist culture that prevailed in the 1960s.
The story is told from a black person's point of view.
