Sheriff Joanna Brady's best intentions to stay on maternity leave take a hit when a serial homicide case rocks Cochise County, dragging her into a far-reaching investigation to bring down a relentless killer in this chilling tale of suspense from New York Times bestselling author J. A. Jance.

This time Sheriff Joanna Brady may expect to see her maternity leave through to completion, but the world has other plans when a serial homicide case surfaces in her beloved Cochise County. Rather than staying home with her newborn and losing herself in the cold cases to be found in her father's long unread diaries, Joanna instead finds herself overseeing a complex investigation involving multiple jurisdictions.

Filled with the beloved characters, small town charm, vivid history, intriguing mystery, and the scenic Arizona desert backdrop that have made the Joanna Brady series perennial bestsellers, this latest entry featuring the popular sheriff is sure to please J. A. Jance's legion of fans.

I am a huge fan of J. A. Jance and I enjoy the stories of the Joanna Brady series, but Joanna Brady is my least favorite main character created by Jance. She is just so emotionless. She tries so hard to be professional, to live up to her late father and her late husband she has lost all sense of emotion. Even in regard to her young son and newborn daughter, she seems to think of them and love them from a great distance, which is rather ironic because since Joanna Brady novel #1 that's EXACTLY of what Joanna thought about her mother toward her. That said, 'Field of Bones' brought me to or near tears several times. Of course, not by Joanna Brady and the way she equally handles all aspect of her life distressingly clinically, but by a compelling victim who drew us in and allowed us to feel every moment of her emotions.

4 stars, but hey, Joanna, lighten up ... or at least have some kind of breakdown to become interesting rather than clinically detached and aloof.

I looked forward to reading Field of Bones and the opportunity to catch up with long-time friends Sheriff Brady, her family, and deputies. I was not disappointed.

This was a fantastic read. It was a great thriller and I couldn’t put it down. J.A. Jance has done it again.

The prologue provides the perfect synapses of the life of Joanna Brady. For those new to the series, the background presented catches you up. For those who are long-time fans (this is book # 18) it highlights the ups and downs of Joanna's life both personally & professionally leaving you cheering her on as Eleanor Sage Dixon arrives on election night.

Joanna is on maternity leave and Butch is on a book tour when a dump site of bones and a recently deceased body is found. Being home with her children gives Joanna a chance to read old journals and keep up with the laundry. Deputy Chief Tom Hadlock needs Joanna's help.

The plot is darker than previous crimes when "the Boss" is keeping women captive in his basement dungeon.

This book even includes a recipe for Sunday Meatloaf.

You can read this as a stand alone but plan to go back and read the previous books to get the most pleasure our of the characters.

As with other comments, this was a fast-paced and exciting story - trying to apprehend a serial killer for his horrific deeds. Suspenseful and a true page-turner

I enjoyed this book very much. The series is well written and this is one of the best in the series. It is extremely well developed and I also enjoy the details about the sheriff's family side as well as her professional side. There are also "extras" thrown in, including information on her father, a previous sheriff, and his diaries.

I love and enjoy all of JA Jance books. This book was by far my most favourite! It was gripping right from the first page. I generally enjoy a novel over a 2 week period, I couldn’t put this book down. I read it twice in less than a week.

Another pretty good book in JA Jance's Joanna Brady series. Mostly dealing with the central character's maternity leave, she also has to delegate authority while a major crime blows up in her county. All in all, another enjoyable Brady mystery.

J.A. Jance hits it out of the park in this latest Joanna Brady installment. It is simply amazing how much she crams into this book AND makes us love Sheriff Brady even more than we did already. There is, of course, murder (specifically a serial killer) and so much more. The book begins with election night, careens into childbirth and then we have a multiple perspectives including the acting sheriff, a young deputy, a kidnapped girl and the perp. Along the way we get insights on working in law enforcement, being a forgotten girl, dealing with a newborn and maternity leave, stalking prey, living in captivity, and so much more. I do have to take a tiny bit of a star off for the fact that the only librarian in the book makes a nasty pass at Butch! Surely he ran into some nice librarians on his book tour??? He would have if he came to our library!
