“The Germans did not start the War and were not the bad guys.” Really? Tell that to the Belgians.

World War I began because one of the Allied governments assassinated the Austrian Archduke. The Germans did not start the War and were not the bad guys. Hitler had no responsibility for World War I. Patriotic military enthusiasm is the insane evil -- everywhere.

I enjoyed this DVD. The story was strong. The characters had some depth. The actors did a great job! It shows from the German point of view how the Germans were forced to fight in the war against their will. They were intimidated by their government & bullied. It shows how horrible war is. It shows how egocentric & self centered Hitler was even to the Germans.

Not as linear as the 1930 version, but I found it much more emotional than the old movie.

Very compelling movie which follows a group of German students through graduation to the end of the WWI. SO many people died during that war - you get a pretty good idea of what it must have been like for soldiers in general, as well as for those who fought on the losing side. It was a good movie, and has aged very well, but the ending was a trite way to emphasize that deaths still occured while awaiting official word of the armistace. Plus, on the personal side, there are always mixed feelings when you feel bad for the people who were fighting for the bad guys.

One of the best war films that focuses on the realities that a group of German students faced that fought in WWI.
