Well acted and moody WWI film that comes close to letting you feel the grime and fear of trench warfare. A new enlistee is quickly disillusioned to the romance of war. Two commanding officers try to help him adjust to his new reality; one currently struggling to hold on to his last scraps of humanity; the other already knows that he is too far gone.

Realistic, no super heroes, most likely the way the First World War was fought for men on the front lines.

I gave it a one star rating because we thought it was dark, slow, boring and uninteresting. We took the DVD out after 30 minuets. I am not a strong fan of war movies and for me to take the time to watch a dark war movie it has to be top notch much like the "War Horse". We checked that one out and liked it. The first dark movie I saw that was "The Crow" This movie was based on a dark comic book and the movie had the same dark feel. If you want to see another dark movie watch "the crow". It was about Brandon Lee's death during the filming if a movie.

Based on a 1928 play dealing with a contingent of British soldiers entrenched in a WWI frontline expecting a massive enemy invasion in which their only goal is to slow the enemy down at the cost of many lives. In 1929, the play starred a 21 year-old Laurence Olivier, directed by a young James Whale (soon to be of Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein fame. This is a devastating anti-war film (after all, WWI was one of the most stupid wars of all time).

Very well done drama about the stress and pain of war, especially world war 1. A well-acted character study that earns a respected place in the pantheon of films about the war to end all wars.

Boring. There wasn't a lot of action in this movie and the rest was about a drunk commander that shouldn't be in charge making decisions about peoples lives. Typical bad war movie with very little action to make up for it.

The 1929 original play that this film is based on was once required reading at English Schools. It highlights the stupidy, strain and heroics of the Great War. I would recommend reading the play. I also recommend watching this film. It's not a big scope war movie like Dunkirk. But claustrophobic and for much of the time set in an officer's trench. Very well acted and whilst not perfect it is as close to the desperation of those who served as most of us will ever get.

One on one violence is called pornographic.
But many violent on many is called heroic.
I think this film demonstrates how much we need to expand the meaning of pornography.
It never asks the real question. How did these reasonably intelligent people allow themselves to be manipulated into such a stupid slaughter? We're a hundred years removed from this 1918 butchery, and still we are sending naïve, i.e. stupid, young men off to die in foreign wars.
Besides the movie is reminiscent of what used to be called Kitchen dramas. Plays in a small room. Overall the acting is competent but the rest of it is a string of tedious clichés.
