May apply to children more but I found the movie to be boring. Kept falling asleep on the couch and also notice there is a lot going on in the movie in which it seems the writer or director took it from other movies but it just does not flow. The movie just jumps all over the place. To me it was a waste of my time watching it.

Children's movie. I like Cate Blanchett but only ever liked Jack Black in "Jumunji Welcome To The Jungle." The set design in this movie is fantastic. The story is not meant for adults - at least not for me. As an adult, worth watching once just to satisfy the curiosity about the clock. Or, better, save some couch potato time & just read the synopsis.

This was a delight. The trailer looked a bit silly, and it was, but the bits of humor really caught me off guard and I enjoyed it more than I expected to.

Schoolkids talk about a murder that supposedly took place at Uncle Jonathan's house. And we see a flashback scene of Isaac Izard casting an explosive spell that leaves him lying dead on the floor. That explosive moment spatters a bit of Izard's blood on the pages of a book. Izard also magically shapes a special key that's said to be made out of human bones.

In the course of the movie, several magical events threaten Lewis, Uncle Jonathan and Mrs. Zimmerman. In one of them, a room full of inanimate automatons comes to life, with the beings grabbing the protagonists and throwing them out of the house. Several jack-'o-lanterns come to life and snap at the good guys, spewing quick-drying pumpkin goop at them. Uncle Jonathan and Mrs. Zimmerman smash the pumpkins with various weapons and magic blasts. Twenty or so books come to life as well, swooping in like bats on Lewis, who's lying prone on the floor. Their bookish attacks lacerate his hands with papercuts.

At school, Lewis and others get thumped around during a basketball game, and Lewis gets punched in the stomach by a bully. Lewis is also locked in a cage and magically suspended over many swords with their blades pointed threateningly toward him. Elsewhere, two people are hit with magical blasts before falling from a high platform and disappearing in the gears of a giant clock.

A topiary griffin snarls and charges at Mrs. Zimmerman. She slips away just outside the reach of its snapping teeth. As part of his warlock studies, Lewis gathers up a fistful of electrical energy and accidentally zaps a magically animated chair, which sends it yelping into another room.

Four uses of "d--n" and one of "h---." People also exclaim "good lord," "blasted" and "my god!"

A magically enhanced hedge that's trimmed into the shape of a griffin is the focus of several toilet humor gags as it blasts leaves and feathers out of its backside. Several other toilet-humor giggles involve Uncle Jonathan's need to urinate.

Jack Black's character paired with Cate Blanchett's character made this movie so good. I even loved the villains! I never like the villains!

Waste of time. Just black magic packaged to appeal to children. Terrible jumpy plot and cliche, empty humor made it a complete waste.

Overall I found this a really fun and enjoyable book adaptation. This is the story of a orphaned boy, Lewis Barnavelt, who goes off to live with his eccentric uncle, played by Jack Black. It turns out his uncle is a warlock, and their neighbour, Mrs. Zimmerman, is a witch. There is a plot about an evil possibly not dead wizard who wants to destroy the world, etc. There are a lot of fun moments and also some surprisingly spooky ones. The plot zips along quickly. Jack Black gets to do some fun stuff and Cate Blanchett is fantastic as their neighbour. The spooky Victorian house is gorgeous and the special effects are mostly well done. My one criticism is that the lead child actor was frequently annoying and seemed out of place. This movie isn't really appropriate for very young children, but older children and young teens who can handle a bit of creepiness might find it just right.

This was a great show, it was interesting and creepy at times. However I would recommend that kids no younger than 12 should watch this show. It was excitable even though it was predictable at times!

Read the comments and decided not to watch. Not interested in a movie for kids. I like kids but not their movies. I like adult entertainment plan and simple. Actually the real reason I did not watch it was I started to read the comments by the person who took the liberties to write a book on the movie and I got tired trying to read it. It went on and on with a bunch of BS and I decided what a bunch of crap. I just could not finish it and felt any move that a person that wrote comments like that enjoyed I most likely would not be interested in. The person that wrote the comments must have a very high opinion of themselves and their ability to put their thoughts on paper and feel it is their duty to share with others and people would relish their comments.

Do not watch this with kids under 10 at minimum. I watched this with my 5 and 8 year old and we were all terrified. When the demon licks an open wound on the hand of a dead person, that was it, off it went and my kids haven't slept in days since. NOT A KIDS MOVIE!!!
