Why has a suspect in the theft turned up dead? And what should magistrate Sir John Fielding do about his feeling that Benjamin Franklin is somehow complicit? While the tensions rise, Sir John and his protégé, Jeremy Proctor, search for answers--and find that justice isn't always served by the letter of the law.

Sir John Fielding is not surprised that Americans are criminals and rebellious. They were sent to the colonies as punishment for crimes. However, he is surprised that they are calling themselves Americans and don't care to be regarded as English. In this addition to the series, Jeremy and Clarissa are becoming adults, Black Jack Bilbo and Jimmie Bunkins fade out and serious amounts of murder are committed as the result of the machinations of Benjamin Franklin.
