Opinion

From Library Staff

A TV show mentioned in this episode which often shows the main characters playing D&D. The Demogorgon villain in this tv series is a known D&D demon.

Stranger Things (also available on DVD) is one of the recent shows or movies that has raised interested in Dungeons & Dragons from a pop culture perspective.

Ranked #6 in the TV category. The first two seasons are also available to borrow on DVD.

Thanks to Stranger Things there's been a lot of interest in the 1980's. The group chats about how they could talk about that decade on a future episode of Overdue Finds.

Stranger Things came up in both interviews today as something people were watching on Netflix

I guess I'm ten years old! :-)
It doesn't live up to the hype, but then, how many things truly do? I doubt I'd watch it if Hubby wasn't interested in it, but since he is, and since it can be very difficult to find shows we can enjoy together, I'm going to say, this one is worth the watch.

Had high hopes for this Netflix feature. It's really quite bad. Boring, cliché, juvenile and amateurish production values and acting. Maybe it you're 10 years old.

Having come into this series starting with season 2, after watching this first season, everything made sense. Even if you're not a fan of the genre, this show is worth watching because it is so well done. From the sets, to the camera work, the writing and the fine work of all the actors, this show is a thrill to watch. Quite enjoyable.

Best TV series I've seen since I finished "House of Cards". Dramatic, suspenseful, and horrorifying by turns, it even has a bit of romance thrown in. Great acting, episodes written by various authors, good FX. I didn't want it to end. I have to process what I just saw for a bit before watching Season 2. Definitely worth your while. Probably too scary for little kids; Netflix rated it TV-14. Really, really good.

Show was confusing at times (even though it’s obviously called Stranger Things), but it was a creepy, suspenseful great show! Super interesting and I like how the show is split into separate parts so you don’t have to watch it as a full movie (even though it’s good, so you probably will)! Good acting! The only bad thing was that the flashbacks were kind of annoying and that the show was just weird at parts. Other than that this was a great show!

Loved it. Had to know how it ends and what happens next. Winona Ryder is a bit crazy in the first three episodes(blame it on direction) but calms down and takes control after that. Worthy of the hype. If I could go back in time and be a D&D nerd in the AV club instead of wasting years on pointless athletics I totally would. Those kids are so cool.

The charm of this series are the kids obviously. But the adults involved are no slouches either. I look forward to the second season but I heard it's more gory which isn't really my cup of tea...

This type of Series is not usually my cup of tea!! However, I found myself enjoying this horror series. I loved that it took place in the 1980's and seemed real! Looking forward to Series 2!

Stranger Things is one of the most memorable series I’ve viewed because of its amazing cast! After being recommended the series by my friends, I decided to watch the first episode and I wasn’t disappointed! I was thirteen at the time, and I felt really connected to the main characters because I could put myself in their situations (since we were the same age). Everything stood out to me because I had never watched anything like it before. Stranger Things did something new and fresh and became successful because of it! The plot follows four best friends Mike Wheeler (played by Finn Wolfhard), Will Byers (played by Noah Schnapp), Dustin Henderson (played by Gaten Matarazzo), and Lucas Sinclair (played by Caleb McLaughlin) and their families in 1980’s Indiana with the exposure to supernatural forces being covered up by the government. I enjoyed the series because of its ability to stay realistic with characters' behaviours, while still having these elements of fiction that would never occur in today's society. I would rate the first season of Stranger Things 5/5 stars; it truly lives up to the hype that has been set for the series since the beginning!

Stranger Things is one of the best series I have ever seen. With it's nostalgic outfits, decors, environment, it genuinely made me feel like I lived in the early 80’s. The show is a perfect mixture adventure, drama, mystery, a little bit of horror and a little bit of thriller. Even though I had so much fun watching the show, the writers didn’t fail to make me cry. I think Stranger Things is a series everybody would like, especially the nostalgic hype makes it way more interesting and exciting and it encourages you to watch more. It it isn’t just a kid show, its a show that people from every age would watch. Honestly the plot and everything else was just pretty awesome and balanced that I wouldn’t want to change anything. I highly recommend it to everybody. I would give it a 4.75 out of 5.

Stranger Things Season 1 was one of the best tv shows I ever watched I really liked this show because it was the first of its kind. I think Netflix did a great job on making this tv show. This is the best tv show they ever made. Without giving any spoilers this tv show is about a group of kids and then one day 1 of them goes missing out of nowhere, everyone starts to worry but one day they find someone interesting. I really liked this tv show because this show was dark but humorous but dark at the same time. This show was placed in the 90’s so it showed what is was like back then to a certain extent. For these reasons I would give this show a 5/5 rating.

Stranger Things is a Netflix original show. The story takes place in Hawkins Indiana, in 1983. Four boys named Mike, Will, Lucas, and Dustin are in the middle of playing Dungeons and Dragons. When its time to leave Will and Dustin race home on their bikes. However, Will turns into the forest after hearing odd noises. The next morning, his mom realizes that he never came home, and his friends did not know why he was not at school. The boys go searching for him, and in the exact spot where he vanished they find a girl named Eleven. If you enjoy Eighties movies, science-fiction, horror, or mystery and adventure. I would watch Stranger Things. The show is nothing but a masterpiece, fitting in so well with the sci-fi movies of the eighties. The show has something in it for everyone and I have not heard one bad comment about it. I will say that this show can get very scary at some points and I would not recommend it for children under the age of twelve. Overall, I would definitely rate this show five out of five stars.

After all the hype, I was not as blown away as I expected to be, but I did enjoy the nostalgia of the early-80s setting. Very reminiscent of 80s horror films, so if you have a special place in your heart for those you will probably like this series. I liked the group of kids and how they could use their hobbies to make sense of everything going on, but I couldn't stand any of the surviving teenagers--probably would have liked it better if I could find that third of the cast more sympathetic!
