A masterclass in filmmaking and acting and a meditation on the purpose of art in the world and what drives people to create it. Definitely not your run of the mill biopic.

Well acted and beautifully shot. A poor decision was made in Willem Dafoe not affecting an accent which, for me, really subtracted from the authenticity of this period piece.

First of all this is an excellent, well acted film!! Synchronicity. A few days ago I happened to watch a documentary called Van Gogh's Ear - a PBS film from the Secrets of the Dead series. It was very interesting, because I had not realized that until a few years ago there was a continuing controversy about how much of his ear Van Gogh removed. Now this is not a question that keeps one up at night, but.... Bernadette Murphy, an independent researcher, after years of work found a drawing done by Van Gogh or his doctor that shows the portion of the ear removed. It involved virtually the entire ear with only a small portion remaining. ( The drawing she found features in this film ). Mystery one solved. As I was watching the film I saw that the artist cut off his left ear. ( I have always wondered if the mutilation was due to auditory hallucinations and an effort to quiet the voices. ) Yet all the self portraits I have seen show the right ear as bandaged. I assumed the film would not have
made such a gross error, so I double checked. I realized that in his paintings of himself, presumably done with a mirror, Van Gogh did not transpose the affected ear correctly but simply painted what he saw in the mirror. Each of us has seen this ability in oneself or a friend if, for example, you point to the right side of your mouth to tell a friend they are wearing part of their dinner on the right side of their face. Some individuals correctly transpose the position of the offending food and wipe it away. Others treat you as a mirror image and wipe on the left side of their faces. ( Try it some time!! ) Mystery number 3. I did not realize that there was controversy about whether Van Gogh shot himself or was attacked. There is a sequence in the film that raises the question, but I thought it was an hallucination. This one we may never know the truth. Highly recommend. Kristi & Abby Tabby .

Excellent film. Worth your time watching it. Made me think.
