For 33 months, from 1977 to 1980, the nightclub Studio 54 was the place to be seen in Manhattan. A haven of hedonism, tolerance, glitz and glamour, Studio 54 was very hard to gain entrance to and impossible to ignore, with news of who was there filling the gossip columns daily. Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager, two college friends from Brooklyn, succeeded in creating the ultimate escapist fantasy in the heart of the theater district.

Awesome documentary about the rise and fall about a popular sexy nightclub in NYC. In a time where cocaine was popular. A lot of famous people was seen in this nightclub too.

I would also mention that many of the bartends and waitstaff died of AIDS , which is mentioned tangentially . The staff boys and men who were selling sex there were numerous and gorgeous. They were obviously chosen for their looks, which ultimately, sad to say, was their death warrant.

I remember hearing about Studio 54 when I was young, but never knew much about it other than the celebrity sightings. In any event, such shenanigans didn't exactly play out here in the Midwest so it didn't even seem real to me back in the day. This documentary makes it very real. I was fascinated with the two owners and the world they created behind the disco-balled doors that only let in who the owners wanted in. Their rise and fall is a compelling story. One of the owners is a key narrator which gives the film authenticity regarding both the heady days of success and the stark reality of failure. A cautionary tale for sure.
