The acting is quite good. Sean Bean, Helen Hunt, Lesley Manville, Zofia Wichlacz and Eryk Biedunkiewicz all give excellent performances and I can't think of anyone who is sub-par.

The history varies from dubious to absurd. The worst is when a Polish guerrilla fighter somehow walks all the way to Belgium to meet up with the BEF, but there are plenty of more minor contortions to make history fit the character stories.

Those stories are sadly is all over the place. Too much time is spent on a typical soap opera romance, and it seems like everyone is related to someone in the most tortured ways. For example, an American in the RAF has a brother serving as a doctor in France who treats the former boyfriend of the girl the RAF American meets. This really strains any possible suspension of disbelief. That said, there are truly poignant tales too, e.g., the siblings Jan and Kasia, and the Rossler family.

All in all, a mixed bag that could have been so much better.
