A revised edition of this major writer's complete poetical work

And I who was walking
with the earth at my waist,
saw two snowy eagles
and a naked girl.
The one was the other
and the girl was neither.
-from "Qasida of the Dark Doves"

Federico Garc#65533;a Lorca is the greatest poet of twentieth-century Spain and one of the world's most influential modernist writers. Christopher Maurer, a leading Garc#65533;a Lorca scholar and editor, has substantially revised FSG's earlier edition of the collected poems of this charismatic and complicated figure, who-as Maurer says in his illuminating introduction-"spoke unforgettably of all that most interests us: the otherness of nature, the demons of personal identity and artistic creation, sex, childhood, and death."

The appreciation of poetry is by its nature subjective, no two readers are likely to agree. This is a vast collection of Lorca's work spanning his entire productive life; it is therefore quite uneven in both style and quality. Some of his more traditional lyric pieces are truly wonderful (e.g. "Morning" from 1918 and "Summer Madrigal" from 1920). But much of his later work, influenced by the surrealism of his close friend Salvador Dali and others of the avant-garde persuasion, consists entirely of metaphor that becomes so dense as to be unintelligible, even its color and rhythm overwhelmed in obscurity. Some of the other sections strike me as trivial, almost throw-away pieces. On the whole, I found this huge volume, running well over 900 pages to be a disappointment -- a sizable load of ore but precious little gold. Having recently enjoyed collections of Umberto Saba and Anna Akhmatova, this one fails to measure up.
