Chronicles the adventures and misadventures of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III as he tries to pass the important initiation test of his Viking clan, the Tribe of the Hairy Hooligans, by catching and training a dragon.

Hiccup's not your typical viking, let alone viking hero. He's quiet, thoughtful and the exact opposite of his dad, the Chief of the Hairy Hooligans. Will Hiccup be able to train Toothless, his disobedient dragon, and become real viking material?

I read these books with my oldest originally, starting when he was eight. But I loved them just as much. They are hilarious and action-packed, full of heart and hardship, replete with all the unfairness of growing up and being asked to do things beyond your concept of your own abilities. To me, t... Fantastic series, we are currently working our way through book 12. Totally different plot and characters than movies, not sure why someone purchased the rights only to change everything. My kids (aged 6 and 9) both love this series.

Full disclosure: I am rating this with a 100% biased mind. I absolutely LOVED the movie and now having read the book, I am eternally grateful for the creative liberties that Hollywood took.
The book, the plot, the humor...it was just OKAY. I did appreciate that it was a quick and easy read.

I can’t believe it took me so long to read this – at a certain point, a series is so popular that you’re kind of like, eh, everyone else has read it, I don’t have to – and now that I have, I kind of can’t believe how popular these books are. Which is not to say I didn’t like this, because I did! It’s funny and a bit snarky and quite fun overall, I just don’t know that I would have expected this to kick off an enormously successful, bestselling franchise with multiple movies, etc. But it was fun!

Children's literature.
Loved the movie of the same title and wanted to read the novel on which the film was based. The characters are the same and it was fun to read the background of the characters I had come to know through the film, but Creswell's tale is quite different than Hollywood's storyline. Nonetheless, the book, and the others in the series, are highly enjoyable. The artwork is terrible though.

The books are amazing... I read one of them, loved it, and made my friend give me the rest of the books to read during the summer! 10/10. Love it.

It's great to read the books in which Dreamworks used to base the amazing movies/TV shows

I really liked this book because it was very interesting. My favourite part was when hiccup was training his dragon toothless. Also, I liked when he was trying to come up with a way to kill the sea dragon. Overall, I have no negative feedback about this book.

I used to read these books to my son when he was 6, 7, 8 years old. He would fall asleep and I would keep reading to the end. Cressida Cowell is an excellent writer with a great imagination - I think she wrote about dragons when she was a child. I laughed and laughed. It's such good stories for kids ... the runt is the wisest of the great and mighty vikings and manages to get out of impossible situations. The books are so much better than the movie because Hiccup speaks dragonese and the only person who communicates with the dragons. The best kids series I could recommend. I bought all 10 books!

Violence: Gross - yet humorous - mentions of blood and gore.

Sexual Content: There is one bad picture after Gobber charges the giant dragon. His pants is missing and he has a bad tattoo on one of his legs.

Other: I think this book has a little disgusting stuff in it.
