I love the premise of this book, the story of a group of young people who are on their own without grown-ups, sharing some really lovely moments, until the world around them fell apart in war. Purely subjectively, though, the narrative style of this book, with its run-on lines and lack of dialogue tags, is just not my favorite. I also felt like overall, I just got a glimpse into this world, and it wasn't enough. I loved the characters, but didn't get to know them very well. The book left me wanting.

I probably would have liked this book if it weren't for the super inappropriate romance that made the whole book hard to stomach.

Here’s a good one: dystopian, future-setting, fictional world war 3, psychedelic drugs, and a questionable relationship between a teenage girl and her distant (?) cousin J. Plus, the main character travels from New York to England and then it’s all about England while she’s there – double travel! What could be better? (submitted by JM)

I loved this book. Did we all have the same fantasy as teenagers, that we are abandoned in a beautiful Neverland without adult supervision until the world collapsed around us?

This is one of the most interesting books I've read. It makes me want to explore and travel in Europe.

The unique narration and brevity of this book is so great. The plot is the type that will reveal more and more holes the more you think about it, so I definitely wouldn't read this for a realistic portrayal of international world affairs. However, I love the tiny bits of paranormal elements and the sense of family, I love the messy angst and colorful spots of imagery.

I have not stopped thinking about this book, even months after having read it. I couldn't put it down. It is a fascinating and memorable read.

All kinds of adjectives I wouldn't have expected to apply to this book apply: sparse, stylish, unique, lush, heartbreaking, messy, gorgeous, real. This is a writer with something to say and her protagonist knows how to say it, never too much and never too little and always in her own way. You will never forget her or her world.

It would be much easier to tell this story if it were all about a chaste and a perfect love between Two Children Against the World at an Extreme Time in History....
