When an engineer is sentenced to death for a petty transgression of guild law, he flees the city, leaving behind his wife and daughter. Forced into exile, he seeks a terrible vengeance - one that will leave a trail of death and destruction in its wake.

But he will not be able to achieve this by himself. He must draw up his plans using the blood of others ...

In a compelling tale of intrigue and injustice, K. J. Parker's embittered hero takes up arms against his enemies, using the only weapons he has left to him: his ingenuity and his passion - his devices and desires.

This is a well written book with problems. If its a choice between reading this and re-reading something else then I would say you might as well read something new. Problems: This book is really just a setup for the next book and it REALLY annoys me authors do that. Also the puts in LOADS of unnecessary descriptions. For example: at one point a character is reading an engineering book because he's stuck waiting for something to happen and author goes on for two pages about what is written in that book. So, if this book had been half as long it would have been 10 times better (or maybe the author could have told the full story in one book rather than three). Also the author "hides the ball" in that the author keeps telling the reader the protagonist has a plan without every saying what that plan is. Then, when the big reveal comes around it is only a partial reveal and it turns out that plan has only worked so far, not because the protagonist is smart, but because he is constantly getting lucky. Personally I found this book so annoying that I'm not going on to read the next book, but, it is well written and, being forewarned, perhaps you will enjoy it.

Great book, a different style of fantasy novel where the hero is more intellectual and wronged than muscle and fighting for a just cause. Good twists and explanations as well.
