The murder of two clam fishermen off the island of Pellestrina, south of the Lido on the Venetian lagoon, draws Commissario Brunetti into the island's close-knit community, bound together by a code of loyalty and a suspicion of outsiders worthy of the Mafia.

The writing and the story were solid but this book is all about the setting. Can't afford that trip to Venice? Read Donna Leon's books instead.

A double murder in a tiny fishing community on a small island in Venice's lagoon taxes Brunetti in a new way. The tight-knit village closes ranks against the police. Brunetti reluctantly accept's Signorina Elettra's offer to visit a relative there. Since she's done so annually, she believes she'll be able to learn more than he could. He learns more than he expects, but not what he expects. Several interesting twists in this one, including the change of setting. I always enjoy Leon's books, and her characters, especially Brunetti. This is an especially good entry in the series.

A suspenseful read set in the colourful, yet problematic islands of the Venetian lagoon.
