Brilliant. Well acted and funny. A pity such intelligence could not have been put to better use. The mystery of who killed him remains- maybe the police and IRA co-operated on this one????

I'm certain co-writer/director John Boorman ("Deliverance") embellished this biopic of Martin Cahill somewhat, but still! What a character! Fearless -- b*lls like watermelons. Smart guy, what a a waste. If he hadn't been dealt the cards in life that he was, who knows what he might've been... (And what's up with that polygamy thing, btw?) Anyways, great movie. Well paced, suspenseful. Brendan Gleeson was dynamite. Jon Voight cracked me up. The whole cast was great. And thanks for the tip, krph3 (subtitles/b&w). Who do ya think did it? IRA? Cops? His own crew?

wow!! if you haven't seen this movie you are in for a real treat. This movie strives to portray, as accurately as possible, the true events of a real modern day irish robin hood (starring Brendan Gleason in his best role ever!!), an irish mob boss, who was assasinated by the IRA in August 1994 -about four years before this movie was made, in 1998- so the amazing events were still fresh enough in everyone's minds...The story of Martin Cahill is quite an example of how, on occasion, fact is stranger and more amazing than fiction (the library also has a biography about him by Paul Williams)
warning:
I recommend the black and white version, because the colorized version censors the swearing. I also recommend using subtitles because the irish accent is pretty thick.

(Martin collapses after lighting the detectives' car on fire in front of his house) Martin Cahill: "I should have never bought this house! They're all out to get me! You don't own things! You don't own things! They OWN you!"

IRA Man: "Are you a Republican?" Martin Cahill: "Criminal. What are youz?" IRA Man: "Loyalists." Martin Cahill: "Ohhh... I'm into loyalty! Loyal to what?" IRA Man: "The Queen." Martin Cahill: "Oh great! I identify with her! Her ancestors were tortured... and murdered... and grabbed everything they could. And, she doesn't pay any taxes!"

Martin Cahill (to Gary, who just admitted to having sex with his own daughter): "You're a prick. Criminals don't molest kids. Leave that to the priests, will ya?"
