THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE starts slow but gains some heat an hour in, lurching forward into the kind of thrills you expected. It's a tad dull waiting for something to happen, which is a minor issue here, but it maintains one's interest all the same. One of its best aspects is the investigation of the satanic impulses of the arrogant personality, the tendency to drive full speed towards depravity when vanity steps in. True, it wasn't an explosive spectacle overall, especially considering that the Devil is the villain, but it did court that supernatural evil mood albeit with more of a chic courtroom flavour. No explanations are offered for any discrepancies; frankly, one could take a hole punch to the script and it wouldn't make a blind bit of difference. For those who liked BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER and ANGEL, those shows that fight a big bad magical being each episode, this film is probably for them, adding an R-rated element but with the same MTV obtuseness. For lighthearted spookiness with a potty-mouthed antagonist, I recommend THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE, but if you don't fall into that very specific category, a balance of campy horror and adult themes, then you should skip it.

Very good supernatural thriller/crime drama. Great Pacino (this is the norm). Good Keanu (this is rare). Great writing and acting with understated effects in a great story. Does feel a little dated rewatched today, but the story is the strength and it holds up well.

I invited my friend over to watch this movie. Most of the times i play movies that are known for it's sound qualities on my HOMETHEATER SYSTEM. But this film is not known for it's audio effects, rather it's known for it's story telling. And the story is told WELL!!! My friend, who normally talks back to the screen while watching movies was a little more reserved this time, and would often say "Oh, my God" or "Holy s- -t" while watching this film. It was obvious she enjoyed this movie and why it's a part of my collection. Mr. Pacino makes a good devil and plays it well. I enjoyed the whole cast of characters and the story. I give this movie 5 stars!!!! A good story, good cast, good characters, and of course the devil. A large bucket of Kentucky fried chicken, wings, legs, breasts, thighs, rolls, corn on the cob, mashed potatoes and coke.
