"For down-and-out junk dealer Don (Franz), life goes from unlucky to unbearable when he discovers that the rare buffalo head nickel he just sold for $90 is worth ten times as much! Refusing to let himself be out-swindled, Don enlists the help of a young protaegae (Nelson) in a scheme to steal the coin back. But their plans are suddenly altered by the intrusion of Teach (Hoffman), a disturbingly aggressive would-be thief who badgers Don into cutting him in on the heist-- a decision that carries explosive consequences for everyone involved"--Container.

A movie I never heard of back when it was new, but should have. A strong film, well worth the watching [as many times as you can stand it].

Unlike Glengarry Glen Ross (1992), this 1996 Mamet movie has more action and mystery but with the same biting dialogues by its protagonist and antagonist.

It is hard to believe that these performances do not seem to get their deserve...
Mamet's poetry in dialogue is a culmination of theater.
Similar to the rhythm of speech in "Guys 'n Dolls' with absent language contractions.
It flows as if watching 'live' theater and not an over rehearsed film's dialogue.
The performances are as good as it gets!

The box blurb above doesn't quite match what really happens - whiplash. Mamet's play shows thieves in squalid and marginally competent rank. The actors lift this night fever to a cautionary tale. Hoffman plays a guy too self centered to see his effect. Franzen surprises by underplaying to Dustin's manic spews. Biggest surprise is Sean Nelson playing Bobby the kid. What he did made the other pieces fit in place. A smart director lined it up. In recent scenarios, Mamet doesn't cue his feints and turns as obviously.

Another masterpiece from the brilliant David Mamet. "Don" is well performed by the veteran actor Dennis Franz.

From IMDb:
Teach: We're talking about money for Christ's sake, we're talking about cards. Friendship is friendship and a wonderful thing and I'm all for it. I never said different, and you know me on this thing, but let's just keep it separate, OK? Let's keep the two apart and we can deal with each other like some human beings.

Don: Action talks, bullshit walks!

Teach: If I had kept everything my old man threw out, I'd be a wealthy man today.

Teach: The world is lies. There is no friendship.
