Jamie Fraser knows three things about the American rebellion: the Americans will win; being on the winning side is no guarantee of survival; and he'd rather die than face his illegitimate son across the barrel of a gun. Claire's grown daughter Brianna, and her husband, Roger, watch the unfolding of Brianna's parents' history - a past that may be sneaking up behind their own family.

Opinion

From Library Staff

The Outlander series— with eight current books and a new one due out soon—is captivating. This book is my favourite of the bunch as it encompasses a fair amount of Canadian history in the storyline.

I found this the least interest book of the series. Will continue to read the rest of this series.

Jan 23 2016....Hey BookReader4818, I watched Outlander on DVD's ordered from the library.....looking forward to the next season!

March 4 2016, well it has taken me 2 years to get through this series, I was listening to the audio books as I read, and I really loved Davina Porter's accents and voices. I now get to start on 'Written In My Own Hearts Blood". Yippee!

As others have noted, this very long book is front heavy, leaving not enough space for the ending. That leaves several highly important plot lines dangling. Still, there is no way Gabaldon can write a truly bad book. This one is a page turner, and while some plot lines are highly odd, the main characters end up where they need to be at the end. Except for Jem, left in a highly precarious position, and Claire and Jamie, whose marriage is equally precarious, through no fault of their own. Fortunately, I have the next one in the series is already on hold. Hopefully Jem will be rescued, and his grandparents will be out of danger.

I admit that I am a history buff and have read novels of this sort for more than 60 years. I listen to the CDs when I drive. I enjoy the historic background to the fiction. Gabaldon seems to have researched the life and times for her background and it is interesting to me to have characters added to the history. If you are a SciFi reader, the possibilities of odd things happening this is for you. Ignore those comments about too long and boring and all that other jealous commenting. If they/we/I could write, then we all would. None of us can know for sure what the 200 year ago era really was like, So thank you Diana for putting your imagination to work and writing this series. Just sorry I don't get Starz to watch Outlander on TV
