In 1950s Ireland, an orphan finds herself living in a small town and entered into a bleak future with the man she married. Quite simply, another life does not seem possible. But then she encounters a photographer on the verge of leaving Ireland and all the ravages of the past seem poised to give way to the great love threatening to consume them both.

A rather sad and simple tale, but very perceptive in its use of narrative: its vivid and rich; characters and settings are easily imagined; as realist style writing, it doesn't get any better. Excellently read by Jim Norton.
