For me, the real highlight of this 2-disc set wasn't its feature film, the silent-era story "Chicago" from 1927 - It was the 2 documentaries on disc 2, especially 1950's "The Golden Twenties", that made my viewing-time feel like it was worthwhile spent.

Through lots'n'lots of excellent vintage footage, as well as some very informative narration, these 2 first-rate documentaries were certainly a wonderful trip back in time to that glorious era of the "Jazz Age" as the world of yesterday was quickly recovering from the end of WW1.

Without these 2 documentaries I would have only rated the feature film, "Chicago", with just 2 stars. Basically this picture was a tired, and trite, little tale about a dislikable, little, two-faced gold-digger and her completely self-centered crime of passion.

*Note* - If you do check out this DVD, make a point of viewing the 2 documentaries that I've mentioned above. I guarantee that you won't be disappointed.

This very enjoyable silent film version of the "Chicago" story was the first of three film versions. Directed by a purposely uncredited Cecil B. DeMille, it is a highly polished satire/melodrama with many laughs. Phyllis Haver is highly impressive as Roxie Hart, showing marvelous comedienne's skills and solid acting strength. The DVD features a restored, shimmering print, made from a pristine copy of the film in DeMille's personal collection. There is no datedness, and this version holds its own with the well-known musical version..
