Rango is a lizard who imagines himself an actor who literally breaks the fourth wall of his terrarium when the hatchback car in which he is riding swerves and sends him careening. Abandoned in the desert amid the shards of his former home, Rango makes his way to the nearby town of Dirt, which is experiencing a mysterious water shortage. The actor in Rango seizes the opportunity to invent a grandiloquent new image for himself, and as in many a western, the stranger in town is suddenly promoted to the rank of sheriff. Along the way to solving the mystery of the vanishing water supply, he must survive highway crossings, giant hawks, an army of bat-riding prairie dogs, and a gun slinging rattlesnake.

Rango is one of the five movies nominated for Best Animated Feature.

“Rango, which may take place entirely within its hero's head - that kind of ambiguity worked in Inception and Black Swan, so why not here? - is about the appetite for myths and stories, whether or not they make sense. It is about the worlds we dream inside our fishbowls, helped by the weird refle... Read More »

I was disappointed. I thought this was going to be incredibly funny. Instead, it was just long and boring. Not for young kids. They probably won't be able to sit through it or understand it.

There should be more than a PG rating on this cartoon. What I found most amusing is that there was an anti-smoking ad before the flick started, and then the story itself glamorized smoking.

Winner of an Oscar for Best Animated Feature, Rango is an underrated western gem from the brilliant director Gore Verbinski. Rango follows the titular hero, a pet chameleon and wannabe actor, who through a series of unfortunate mishaps ends up in the wild west desert town of Dirt. Rango will have to take on his greatest role yet as he becomes the new sheriff of the town and must uncover an insidious plot revolving around missing water, fend off an evil rattlesnake outlaw, and come to terms with his own identity rather than blending in to his surroundings. My favorite part about this film is the subtle humor strewn throughout the story that will often go over the heads of younger viewers. With each viewing, I pick up a new detail or line that I didn't notice before, which makes it a great one to watch on repeat. I also like that this really is an animated film for adults, an audience that often gets overlooked when it comes to non live action fare. Also, this goes without saying, but the animation is stunning and a visual feast for the eyes.

Oscar winner for Best Animated Feature in 2011. The animation is truly astonishing. Wow! The story is fun and aimed at grown-ups, not kids. Kids can watch it but some of the material will go over their heads. Lots of laughs and goofy weirdness. Depp's chameleon character Rango is great fun.

Great movie all around. Many bizarre parts but it doesn't take away from the amazing everything else!

Despite a slow somewhat generic start (kooky critters, kooky voices, kooky pratfalls) it quickly becomes apparent that Gore Verbinski’s little animated feature is aimed more at mom and dad and less at the wee ones. Some biting adult humour and no-nonsense cartoon violence coupled with glaring spoofs on everything from "Star Wars" to "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" to every film Clint Eastwood has ever made, not to mention a bit of New Age mysticism, will definitely have adults giggling while the kiddies gape at the pretty colours. And those colours are pretty indeed with impeccable animation picking out every hair on a mouse’s face and every feather on the band of mariachi owls who serve as the story’s Greek chorus—an aerial dogfight with dive-bombing bats was especially well choreographed. The entire production looks and feels like a Sergio Leone duster (it isn’t that difficult to reimagine Lee Van Cleef as a villainous viper after all) and the combined vocal talents of Johnny Depp, Ned Beatty, Ray Winstone (as a cockney Gila Monster) et al ensure that all those one-liners remain sharp as tacks. A wicked little antidote to "Frozen".

My 9-year-old needed something else in her head before going to bed, so probably NOT for kids under 8. Film about a desert community down to its last bit of water. Animated, so targeting kids, but I think it misses its mark.
