Opinion

From Library Staff

With his first album of new material in seven years, Tom has pared down the Harry Partch influences, going for more of a gutsy R&B feel a la “Heart Attack and Vine”. The voice is still unmistakably his own, but the music is more direct, resulting in one of his finest releases in recent memory.

One does not listen to Tom Waits and expect a conventional singing and music style. He does paint pictures of emotions with his voice with particular insight into the seamy side of life. His work is more about what he is saying, than the music, although the music fits the mood that he creaties. An amazing talent, that I very much appreciate.

It helps be a Waits fan to appreciate this album which is one of his best. All the usual elements are here - his gravel voice, odd rhythms, clanky instrumentation, dark lyrics. But this is one of his most melodic and accessible records. I recommend it.

I reckon this is Waits's most musical album, ever.
It's certainly my favourite so far, and I've been listening to him since the late 70s.
Keith Richards adds a nice angle, but Waits's writing is what does the real trick, and the CD's musicality is spread out among several, playing various instruments.
(One can only assume that old aaa5756 was never a fan...)
