.Put Carne Ross’s The Leaderless Revolution next to Hans-Hermann Hoppe (Democracy: The God that Failed), Theodore Lowi (The End of Liberalism), Chris Hedges (Empire of Illusion), C. Wright Mills (The Power Elite) and others who’ve tried to tell us something’s rotten in Denmark.

A consulting diplomat now, Ross lost his illusions when, as a key British official, he publicly mustered the case for war with Iraq while knowing the evidence for Saddam’s purported weapons of mass destruction was weak, or non-existent. Onetime American weapons inspector Scott Ritter has said the same thing, as have others.

Representative democracy ist kaputt. Forget about the conservative-liberal, right-left partisan dichotomy, which is obsolete. Solutions, if any there are, are to be found in reclaiming individual moral agency, Ross says, and oxygenating political space as it opens up.

A cautionary note: while you’re excavating your convictions on the road to moral rearmament, don’t underestimate the willingness of apparently respectable people—The Suits-- to engage in or encourage others to engage in criminal and civil misconduct to protect their corporate masters and their own civic self-esteem. Serious, folks. On the up side, you’ll gather friendly, encouraging words from surprising quarters at unlikely times. They’ll give you strength and help you understand whether you’re on the right track.
