a very good eye opener into the daily lives of three sisters whose mother has abandoned them. Their father takes work in the city to support them but work is scarce. For all intents and purposes they are left to fend for themselves for quite a bit of the day and months at a time while the father is away. Chores are done in exchange for meals from an aunt. Life is very basic, dirty and fragile; routines are unchanging and monotonous. When their father returns from the city, there are 'presents' of new outfits. He returns to the city with the youngest daughter in order to find a 'babysitter' who will be the family's next mother.
