More the story of a man dealing with alcoholism than a biopic of John Callahan, stellar performances from Joaquin Phoenix and Jonah Hill make this film worth watching. It does meander quite a bit and jumping from one dramatic moment to another makes it feel like an Oscar bid movie. Unfortunately for them the subject may be a little too obscure and they forget to really tell the story of John Callahan. I always enjoyed John Callahan's comics and was looking forward to learning more about him. Instead all I learned was that he was an alcoholic and a quadriplegic. Well, that I already knew.
