Night is a memoire written by Elie Wiesle narrated by Eliezer, a Jewish teenager and his plight of surviving Nazi Germany’s concentration camp. During WWII, Eliezer lived in the Transylvania Hungarian region (modern day Romania) in a Jewish community where he was devoted to his faith. Soon after German occupied Hungary, the Nazis arrested the Jews. He and his father were taken to the notorious concentration camp in Auschwitz. As soon as they stepped off the train at Auschwitz, the smell of death, of burning bodies filled the air. Eliezer walked passed incinerators where they burned babies. He and his father were lucky to be assigned to labor instead of being put to immediate death. The extreme inhumane treatment at the concentration camp turned most prisoners to be concerned only with their own survival over helping each other. Life in this atrocious condition forced Eliezer to abandon God whom he once loved and questioned if He really existed. Anyone interested in learning about the Holocaust must read this book. Its compelling description of the unimaginable cruelty of Nazi Germany is eye opening and jaw dropping. Shock of the graphic depictions brings the horrors of the concentration camps to life. The only ‘crime’ the prisoners committed was just because they were Jews. This book also awakens its reader about discrimination as a whole and how discrimination can be massively destructive and often deadly. Night is a trilogy written by Elie Wiesel. I am absolutely going to read the other two books, Dawn and Day.
