A Small Selection of Short Speculative Fiction

Capital City Press Featured Writer Rhonda Parrish shares about this list: "I agonized over this list. I knew that I wanted it to showcase short fiction because I don’t think short stories get nearly as much love as they deserve, but did I want to limit it to anthologies or include single author collections? What about genre? Should I pick just one or go with the whole ‘speculative fiction’ umbrella (which includes fantasy, horror and science fiction)? In the end, as you’ll see, I have included both single author collections and anthologies, and though the themes do skew a bit toward the darker side of the speculative fiction spectrum, I’ve included some works which are not. If you’re still really not sure where to start I’d suggest going with one of the first three titles because, as anthologies, they guarantee a wider sampling of author style, theme and voice just by virtue of having been written by several different people."

All-new Stories in Celebration of Ray Bradbury

I love the concept of this anthology – brand new stories inspired by the stories of Ray Bradbury. Not retellings of Bradbury’s work, but stories which celebrate his work. Essentially, ‘What kind of story do you think of when you hear the name Ray…

100 of His Most Celebrated Tales

    Bradbury, Ray, 1920-2012
This is going to sound like an odd thing to say about a book I am recommending but the biggest thing I learned from reading this collection is that every author can have a bad story. As a writer that can be fantastic because it’s good to remember…

An Oral History of the Zombie War

    Brooks, Max
Did you watch the movie? This is nothing like the movie. Now that we’ve got that out of the way, I’m going to say some words that probably aren’t put together very often – intelligent zombie fiction. This is intelligent zombie fiction. It contains…

  • The Last Unicorn is one of my favourite novels of all time and this collection contains the sequel to it. That sequel, the novella entitled “Two Hearts” is enough, in my mind, to earn this title a spot on this list, but the other stories are not…
